This DWR regional office is located on an environmentally sensitive site adjacent to Virginia Commonwealth University’s Inger and Walter Rice Center for Environmental Life Sciences in Charles City County, VA. The 364-acre property, with a 70-acre lake, is located halfway between the Shirley and Berkley Plantations on the James River. The administrative offices, classrooms, and training facilities of the DGIF support agency biologists, many of whom collaborate with Inger and Walter Rice Center personnel on fisheries and wildlife biology research and management issues.
2RW provided LEED consulting and MEP engineering for sustainable, energy-efficient features such as natural ventilation, proper zoning, efficient environmental conditioning, and lighting control systems. DGIF’s environmentally focused outreach and educational mission drove the scope of the energy-efficient building design.
The LEED Certified building is designed and constructed to protect the adjacent wetlands and preserve the site for future research.
