2RW is providing MEP/FP engineering for the renovation of an existing two-story school building which includes upgrading and replacing mechanical systems; upgrading plumbing fixtures/piping; upgrading technology and security systems and replacing of existing cables; upgrading of kitchen equipment; generator and chiller; relocating health suite to an exterior wall; and replacing fire alarm system. A 3,200 SF addition contains an activity room, physical education/school age child care offices, physical education storage room, and toilet room.

Project Goals

As part of a facility renewal program, Old Bridge Elementary School was due for renovations and upgrades. The improvements meet the needs of a growing student population, and ensure the school is safe, functional, and provides the modern facilities necessary to support the current educational programs.

Services

2RW’s services included a field survey to determine replacement needs, identify potential connections, and verify existing conditions for a project that added an activity room, offices, storage, and a restroom, along with renovation of the kitchen and MEP/FP systems and relocation of the health suite. MEP/FP design included new central plant equipment with two high-efficiency, natural gas-fired condensing boilers and a chilled water system, a new dedicated outdoor air system (DOAS) with energy recovery, modifications to existing sanitary, vent, and domestic hot and cold water piping to support the renovation of the full-service commercial kitchen, and new fire alarm, intercom, and security systems with extensions to the building additions.

Construction was carefully coordinated with the owner and design team and completed over 13 phases to minimize disruption to the learning environment. Strategic equipment selection, reuse of existing distribution components, and careful coordination of design tasks helped keep the project on budget.

Results

The new systems provide improved temperature and humidity control, enhancing comfort for students, teachers, and staff. High-efficiency systems are expected to reduce energy and water use, while updated ventilation systems meet code requirements and improve indoor air quality, supporting occupant health and wellness.
