MEP engineering services for this term contract project included a field survey and feasibility study, followed by design and construction administration for system upgrades. The design incorporates a dedicated outside air system with new package terminal heat pumps and a direct digital control building automation system integrated with the campus network for monitoring and alerts.

Project Goals

Lambeth Field Apartments complex is comprised of 25 buildings with 174 student apartments. The apartments were conditioned using package terminal air conditioning units (PTACs), which were the only source of outside air and had chronic moisture infiltration and humidity issues. The University needed to update these systems in time for move-in for the upcoming academic year.

Services

As prime consultant on this term contract project, 2RW’s services include:

  • A field survey of existing systems and conditions and the subsequent feasibility study summarizing system replacement options and recommendations
  • Mechanical and electrical engineering and construction administration for:
    • A dedicated outside air system (DOAS) with new package terminal heat pumps (PTHP)
    • A direct digital control (DDC) building automation system (BAS) connected to the central campus building management system for monitoring and automated alerts

Results

  • Positive pressurization of the buildings with space-neutral dehumidified air improves ventilation and controls humidity; providing healthier living environments and making the residences more energy efficient and comfortable.
  • PTHP units provide individual climate control for bedrooms and common spaces in the residences.
