MEP/FP engineering for modernization of learning labs at Jouett and Walton Middle Schools supports flexible learning environments with upgraded fan coil systems, ductwork modifications, BAS integration, and dimmable LED lighting with occupancy sensors and skylights for daylighting.

Project Goals

Jouett and Walton Middle School learning laboratories were identified for modernization as a part of Albemarle County Public Schools’ initiative to create modern and flexible learning environments. The laboratories, internally located in the schools, lacked natural daylight and needed to be upgraded.

Services

2RW provided MEP/FP design for:

  • New 4-pipe fan coil units tied into the existing chilled water/hot water system at Jouett Middle School
  • Modification of the duct work and reuse of the existing induction terminal boxes at Walton Middle School
  • Integration of system components to existing building automation systems
  • Dimmable LED lighting integrated with occupancy sensors and tubular skylights to maximize daylight harvesting

Results

  • New skylights in both of these internal rooms introduce natural light where none was available before.
  • Exposed building systems with labeled piping promote “environment as a teacher”.
