MEP/FP engineering for the courthouse addition and connector featuring new courtrooms, holding cells, and secure circulation. The design integrates quiet, maintenance-friendly systems, secure holding areas with concealed infrastructure, and supports controlled access between the new and existing buildings.
2RW provided MEP/FP engineering for a three-story addition and connecting corridor linking the new facility to the original Jeffersonian-style courthouse built in the 1820s. The design addressed the unique requirements of courthouse spaces, including indoor air quality systems that do not interfere with acoustics or security measures, maintenance-friendly systems, and electrical design to support hydraulic accessibility lifts.
The systems were tailored to support secure operations, including holding cells designed with no exposed plumbing, lighting, fire sprinkler, or exhaust systems. Overall, the design integrates quiet, discreet, and functional MEP/FP systems that enhance safety, performance, and compatibility with the historic courthouse.
The completed expansion provides space for circuit, general district, and juvenile and domestic relations courtrooms, as well as holding cells. A secure connector links the addition to the original courthouse, allowing all visitors to enter through a single controlled access point and creating a safer, more efficient environment for the public, staff, and judiciary.
