Project Goals
VCU’s Basketball Development Center was designed to provide state-of-the-art facilities in one building for both its men’s and women’s basketball programs and to bolster its recruiting and player/team development efforts.
Services
2RW teamed with the prime contractor to complete a significant portion of the engineering design during the pursuit of this design-build project. The team was subsequently hired to complete the project.
2RW provided the following services:
- Full MEP/FP engineering, components of which included a water-source heat pump system, high-efficiency plumbing fixtures, and LED lighting to achieve LEED Gold certification. The MEP/FP systems accommodated a variety of specialized spaces within the facility:
-
- Men’s and women’s locker rooms
- Training, hydrotherapy, and strength and conditioning rooms
- Players’ lounges and academic study areas
- Video viewing and editing rooms
- Coach, trainer, and support staff offices and conference rooms
- Player dining area with prep kitchen
- Hall of Fame lobby
- LEED energy modeling to optimize energy performance.
The principles of sustainable design guided every aspect of this project. Innovative building systems, storm water/wastewater management systems, and design strategies were promoted to the maximum extent possible to attain the goal of LEED Gold certification.
Results
33% energy savings and 41% water use reduction over baseline.
