A historic guest lodging facility within the Washington Navy Yard was renovated to modernize accommodations and support spaces while preserving the building’s historic character. 2RW provided MEP/FP design and energy modeling services, upgrading building systems for nine guest suites, dining and office areas, and adding air conditioning to previously unconditioned spaces to improve comfort, functionality, and long-term building performance.

Project Goals

Visiting Flag Quarters (VFQ) serves as temporary guest quarters for the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO). Located within the Washington Navy Yard in Washington, DC, the VFQ is the cornerstone of a National Historic Landmark district and is an important piece of American military and architectural history. Originally built in 1805, the building required extensive renovations to accommodate current and future functional requirements.

Services

2RW provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection (MEP/FP), and LEED energy modeling for the renovation of nine guest suites, a dining suite, and support offices. This project brought the interior up to par with commercially available residential housing without harming the building’s historic fabric. Additionally, the basement offices were updated and air conditioning was added to the fourth floor.
