Mechanical and electrical engineering for this term contract project included assessment of the existing HVAC system and design to convert it from a VAV system to a 4-pipe, single-zone VAV system to improve efficiency and reduce fan energy. Services also included coordination of MEP design and construction with concurrent projects to support infrastructure upgrades and streamline installation.

Project Goals

Thornton Hall is the central home of the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS). Since its construction in 1935, it has undergone several renovations and expansions to accommodate additional departments. This project created a new classroom by consolidating three existing rooms and an adjacent corridor.

Services

2RW’s services for this term contract project included:

  • Assessment of the current HVAC system
  • Mechanical and electrical system design for conversion of the existing variable air volume (VAV) system to a 4-pipe, single-zone VAV system that moves only as much as as is needed, greatly reducing fan energy
  • Coordination of MEP design and construction to facilitate and accelerate other construction projects occurring simultaneously (for example, 2RW coordinated with other UVA project managers so conduit for other infrastructure upgrades could be installed when the walls were open for our projects)
