To accommodate growth and improve safety, Charlotte County expanded its historic courthouse to provide larger, more secure spaces for its circuit, general district, and juvenile and domestic relations courts, as well as upgraded holding cells.
The project included construction of a three-story addition and a connecting corridor that links the new facility to the original Jeffersonian-style courthouse built in the 1820s.
2RW provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection (MEP/FP) engineering services for the addition and corridor. The systems were tailored to the courthouse’s unique requirements, incorporating maintenance-friendly designs, quiet and discreet indoor air quality solutions that support acoustics and security, and hydraulic accessibility lifts. The secure holding cells were engineered with concealed plumbing, lighting, fire sprinkler, and exhaust systems to enhance both safety and functionality.
The completed expansion provides the space needed to house the circuit, general district, and juvenile and domestic relations courtrooms and holding cells. A secure connector links the addition with the original structure, allowing all visitors to enter through a single controlled access point, creating a safer and more efficient environment for the public, staff, and judiciary.
