Project Goals

Built in the 1950s, Dorothy Hamm Middle School (previously home to the H-B Woodlawn Program) underwent a complete renovation in 1995 with a subsequent addition built in 2007. Many of the systems were experiencing premature equipment failures and needed replacement.

Services

This project entailed HVAC improvements in classrooms, individual office areas, the cafeteria and servery, library, administration and stage areas, gymnasium and auditorium areas, and the kitchen area.

As prime contractor, 2RW implemented the design, bidding, and construction phases and directed architectural and structural engineering of the project. 2RW’s services included:

  • A field survey to determine replacement needs, identify potential connections, and verify existing conditions
  • MEP/FP design for:
    • New high-efficiency (condensing) sealed combustion type, complete replacement of existing outside air system with dedicated outside air units utilizing energy recovery
    • Building automation control systems (BAS) upgrade; plumbing system upgrade
    • Fire suppression system modifications
    • Electrical repair and improvements, including installation of new LED lighting in corridors

Results

Despite the aging building envelope the new systems are better able to maintain temperature and humidity conditions, making the school more comfortable for students, teachers, and staff.

“Arlington Public Schools (APS) has had 2RW on a term contract since 2011 for engineering related consultancy services… They have consistently provided quality service to us, always on time and within budget. We would expect that they will be a strong candidate when we re-solicit our A&E Services next year.”
