Originally constructed in 1927 to educate African American students, the historic Douglas School served as Winchester’s only such institution until 1966. Winchester Public Schools sought to preserve and repurpose the facility as its new central administrative offices and public meeting space, creating a modern workplace that honors the school’s legacy while enhancing the efficiency, accessibility, and community presence of the district’s operations.
2RW provided facility and systems assessments followed by full MEP/FP engineering design for the preservation and adaptive reuse of the historic building, along with design for the addition and separate support facility. The historic portion received hydronic systems that respect the building’s architectural character while delivering reliable heating, cooling, and humidification to address the challenges of an aging building envelope. The addition was designed with high efficiency DOAS and VRF systems to support strong user controllability and energy conscious operation. Because the project progressed during the COVID pandemic, the DOAS system design was adapted to offer increased ventilation capacity and support healthier indoor conditions.
The renewed Douglas School now provides Winchester Public Schools with a high-quality administrative and public meeting environment while preserving an important community landmark. The updated systems improve comfort, indoor air quality, and energy performance, extending the building’s useful life and ensuring that its historic significance continues to support the community for generations to come.
