Scope of Services
Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Fire Protection, (MEP/FP) Engineering
LEED Energy Modeling

VCU’s Basketball Development Center was designed to provide state-of-the-art facilities in one building for both its men’s and women’s basketball programs and to bolster its recruiting and player/team development efforts.

2RW Project Case Study Main Image

2RW teamed with the prime contractor, Barton Malow, to complete a significant portion of the engineering design during the pursuit of this design-build project. The team was subsequently hired to complete the project.

2RW provided the following services:

  • Full MEP/FP engineering, components of which included a water-source heat pump system, high efficiency plumbing fixtures, and LED lighting. The complex MEP/FP engineering accommodated a broad range of specialized spaces within the facility: Men’s and women’s practice courts with viewing deck
    • Men’s and women’s locker rooms
    • Training, hydrotherapy, and strength and conditioning rooms
    • Players’ lounges and academic study areas
    • Video viewing and editing rooms
    • Coach, trainer, and support staff offices and conference rooms
    • Player dining area with prep kitchen
    • Hall of Fame lobby
  • Whole-building energy consumption modeling throughout the design process to optimize energy performance.
  • LEED consulting and planning to meet the University’s LEED goals and the requirements of its Sustainability Plan.

The principles of sustainable design guided every aspect of this project. Innovative building systems, storm water/wastewater management systems, and design strategies were promoted to the maximum extent possible to attain the goal of LEED Gold certification.

  • 33% energy savings over baseline
  • 41% water use reduction
