A $23 million expansion and renovation of McKinley Elementary School helped Arlington County better serve its rapidly growing student population and create a more-sustainable building and environment. The need for the expansion was identified during a district-wide capacity and facilities study.
The project included a renovation of administrative offices, classrooms, media center, kitchen and cafeteria and the addition of 14 classrooms and a new gymnasium, entrance lobby, and support spaces.
2RW performed energy modeling to enable data-driven comparisons of HVAC alternatives. The data facilitated design decisions that minimized heating and cooling loads and reduced HVAC system requirements. Sustainable MEP/FP design features included:
