Loudoun County Public Schools Independence High School

Scope of Services
Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Fire Protection (MEP/FP) Engineering

A rapidly growing student population in Loudoun County is driving the need to build high-quality schools quickly and efficiently. In response, Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) has developed school prototypes that can be easily adapted to the requirements of different sites and communities. Independence High School was based on the LCPS two-story high school prototype design and will serve 1,800 students in grades nine through twelve.

Services

2RW provided MEP/FP engineering for this new high school, which opened fall 2019. Services included the design of low-voltage and audio visual/information technology systems. The MEP/FP design incorporates environmentally sustainable best practices while meeting the requirements of educational facility guidelines and standards.

The sustainable systems include high-efficiency condensing water heaters, low-flow fixtures, and natural and LED lighting with daylight sensors. The facility is comprised of classrooms, a media center, cafeteria, auditorium, gymnasiums, and outdoor artificial turf fields.

Results
  • Basing new schools on a prototype allows LCPS to standardize on equipment, parts, and maintenance procedures. This helps significantly reduce operations, maintenance, repair, inventory, and training costs.
  • The sustainable systems incorporated into the design improve energy efficiency, comfort, and occupant productivity while further reducing operations and maintenance costs.
