The Imperial Centre for the Arts and Sciences, located in downtown Rocky Mount, is a 145,000 SF cultural and educational complex. The former Imperial Tobacco Factory processing plant complex (c.1903) was abandoned and dilapidated prior the renovation. The $32,000,000 project transformed the Tobacco Factory and former Brazwell Memorial Library (c.1914) into six Art Galleries, the Cummins Planetarium, Children’s Museum, an Animal Habitat Center, and a 500-seat Performing Arts Center.

2RW Consultants, Inc. designed the mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems for the new arts and sciences campus. Space heating is generated using high-efficiency gas-fired condensing boilers, and cooling is provided by air-cooled chillers. The mechanical and electrical system designs incorporate a number of features to minimize energy and water consumption, including variable speed pumping, and energy recovery from exhaust air streams.
