Scope of Services
Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Fire Protection (MEP/FP) Engineering

The Halifax County Courthouse, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was built in 1838 and houses records dating back to 1752. Renovations and additions to the historic building and 1960s annex will modernize the building; create space for the Commonwealth Attorney’s office and the circuit, general district, juvenile and domestic relations courts; and provide space for archival records.

Services

2RW provided a variety of MEP/FP engineering services as part of the renovation and addition project including:

  • A feasibility study of existing spaces within the court complex to determine the best option for temporarily relocating courts and administrative support services during the project. The study determined that a partial renovation of the existing Mary Bethune office building was the best option.
  • MEP engineering for the partial renovation of the 4,750 SF Mary Bethune building.
  • MEP/FP engineering for the complete renovation of the existing historic courthouse and annex. The design incorporated an FM200 clean agent fire suppression system for the dedicated archival and file storage space to protect important documents.
  • MEP/FP engineering for a 9,000 SF, three-story office building addition for the Commonwealth’s Attorney.
Results

New MEP systems were incorporated without affecting the building’s historic integrity.
