2RW Consultants, Inc. completed a preliminary audit of building energy use at Fort George Meade in Maryland for the United States Army, in support of a guaranteed energy savings project.

Services

The energy study covered nearly 1,500,000 square feet in 50 separate facilities. Energy conservation measures (ECM) identified by 2rw included:

  • Lighting retrofits in eleven facilities
  • Heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) system replacements in 24 buildings (including Pershing Hall HQ and the George G. Meade Museum.)
  • Geothermal heat pumps, a renewable energy source, at ten facilities
  • Solar domestic hot water for the Gaffney Fitness Center which houses gymnasiums, a natatorium, weight training, and racquetball rooms
  • Addition and/or replacement of building automation and metering systems in 45 facilities

The energy analysis was conducted with Trane TraceTM 700 whole building simulation software. A baseline simulation was created and calibrated using metered and logged data according to the Federal Energy Management Program’s (FEMP) Measurement and Verification (M&V) Guidelines: M&V for Federal Energy Projects. This simulation reflected current Post operations and energy consumption. The baseline simulation was then altered to incorporate recommended ECMs to determine the energy savings.

Results

The initial energy analysis identified, quantified, and provided preliminary design approaches (in support of future construction contractor pricing) for new modular hot water boilers and chiller plants, retro-commissioning of existing Thermal Storage Systems (ice), as well as new air handling units, geothermal heat pumps, Smart Meters and building automation system (BAS). The annual savings associated with these measures were estimated to exceed $2,000,000.
