DC PCS DC International school and LAMB PCS Adaptive Reuse and Addition

Scope of Services
Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Fire Protection (MEP/FP) Engineering
LEED Energy Modeling

The goal of this adaptive reuse project was to update Delano Hall, a historic 1930s-era nurses’ dormitory on the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center campus, into a sustainable, innovative school. The updated facility houses two international language immersion programs—the DC International School (DCI) and one of its feeder schools, the Latin American Montessori Bilingual Public Charter School (LAMB PCS). A new addition houses a gymnasium and other programmatic space. At capacity, the school will accommodate approximately 1,000 to 1,400 students in grades 6 through 12.

Services

2RW provided a variety of MEP/FP design and energy consulting services to improve the thermal performance of the existing building envelope and deliver a facility that met the school’s sustainability mission. 2RW’s scope of work included:

  • LEED consulting services (LEED energy modeling, planning, and design) to support the project’s LEED Gold certification target.
  • Sustainable MEP/FP design which incorporated a variety of green-building strategies including low-flow water fixtures, daylighting systems, LED lighting, a highly efficient HVAC system, water re-use, two-stage energy recovery systems in the outside air units, demand-control ventilation, and connection to the campus thermal utility microgrid.
Results

The sustainability and health-focused design features of this adaptive reuse project have helped DCI and LAMB expand their outreach and influence to the community. Some of the sustainability benefits include:

  • A more-comfortable and healthier environment that promotes learning and achievement.
  • A highly efficient facility with lower operational costs and a lower environmental impact.
  • Opportunities for hands-on learning that help develop environmentally conscious citizens.
