Woodberry Forest School sought to modernize the Turner and Taylor dormitories and connect them with a new link to enhance student living, improve accessibility, and update aging infrastructure while maintaining the historic character of the buildings.
2RW provided MEP/FP engineering for the comprehensive renovation of the Turner and Taylor dormitories and the construction of the new connecting link. The design replaces outdated systems with modern and efficient infrastructure tailored to the needs of residence halls and student living.
A new two-pipe hydronic cooling system, serving fan coil units located within dormitory closets, and a dedicated outside air system, provides consistent temperature control, increased ventilation, and better humidity management. Each fan coil unit serves a small cluster of student rooms, providing residents with localized temperature control while maintaining energy efficiency. The use of quiet closet-mounted equipment and carefully designed air distribution helps create comfortable sleeping environments with minimal noise. Electric reheat is used to fine-tune temperature and for humidity control. It supports the school’s long-range goal of reducing reliance on fossil fuels, while chilled water extended from the Manning Chiller Plant increases system reliability and ensures dependable comfort throughout the year.
Electrical improvements include a new centralized service entrance and distribution system located within the link addition, supporting improved lighting, dependable power for daily use, and safer building operations. Energy-efficient LED lighting, combined with modern control strategies, enhances visibility in corridors, common areas, and living spaces.
Plumbing systems were fully replaced with new domestic water and sanitary infrastructure, along with water-conserving fixtures and updated water-heating equipment, to ensure reliable service and reduce utility costs. New fire alarm systems, security pathways, and communications infrastructure provide a safer and more connected residential environment that supports current and future campus technology needs.
The renewed Turner and Taylor dormitories now offer students and faculty significantly improved comfort, indoor air quality, and system reliability. The new link addition unifies the two buildings with shared amenities, improved accessibility, and more efficient service distribution. Together, these upgrades create a more functional, energy-efficient, and cohesive residential environment that supports Woodberry Forest School’s long-range campus goals.
