Carrier Library is officially open to the public. At the ceremony, JMU President James Schmidt cut the purple ribbon and called the library “the heartbeat of a school.” The MEP engineering design led to the renovation, restoration, and expansion of this campus landmark, transforming the 1939 library into a center of innovation, research, learning, and a hub for fostering the student community.
The 195,111 SF project required thoughtfully integrating modern systems into the building’s historic architecture. Engineering solutions included a new steam and chilled water plant, quiet HVAC systems designed for focused learning, and precise temperature and humidity controls for archival collections. Beyond the infrastructure, the renewed Carrier Library features collaborative spaces, makerspaces, podcasting studios, advanced classrooms, special collections facilities, and a conservation lab. Behind the scenes, the engineered designs provide reliable and efficient systems to support generations of students, faculty, and visitors—fostering collaboration, research, and exploration.
