Designed to achieve Green Globes 3 certification, the two-story, 95,000 SF building will replace an existing building with a healthier and sustainable learning environment for students to grow and prosper for years to come.
The new Burnt Mills Elementary School will be in a group of new MCPS projects to pursue Green Globes certification and will join nearly 40 other schools nationwide. Green Globes Level 3 Certification—equivalent to a LEED Gold Rating—is an emerging alternative to LEED that has recently been approved by the U.S. General Services Administration for federal ratings. The Sustaining Guiding Principles employ integrated design, optimizing energy performance, protecting and conserving water, enhancing the indoor environment, and reducing the impact of materials as best practices.
Sustainable MEP features for this project include a high-efficiency air-cooled variable refrigerant flow system, outdoor air systems with energy recovery, demand control ventilation strategies, water-saving plumbing fixtures, LED lighting with digital lighting controls, and a central building automation system with direct digital controls for monitoring and automated alerts.
The new school, currently under construction, is scheduled to open for the 2023-2024 school year, and will serve approximately 650 students
