In 2015, philanthropist Inger Rice made a donation to fund a multi-building overnight lodge and to contribute to the construction of a research laboratory on VCU property along the James River. The overnight lodge will allow the Rice Rivers Center to host top international ecologists conducting on-site research or multi-day fieldwork excursions. The lodge accommodates up to 22 visiting researchers, students, and other groups for overnight stays ranging from days to weeks..

2RW provided sustainable MEP/FP engineering for the construction of a new meeting building and three guest lodges with nine guest rooms. The lodge is designed to be simple and efficient with user-friendly designs which include:

  • LED lighting with occupancy sensors
  • Low-flow fixtures
  • High-efficiency, mini-split, heat pumps which allow individual room control
