This project entailed the design and construction of the new Southside Virginia Family YMCA. The facility features a competitive four-lane pool with water slide and zero-depth entry area. It also features administrative offices, a child care area, men’s and women’s locker rooms, a large wellness center with cardiovascular and strength training equipment, and several multi-purpose program rooms.

Services

2RW provided the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) engineering design for this project. The HVAC system featured a packaged rooftop air-cooled pool dehumidification unit (PDU) with natural gas-fired hot water heating which provides environmental space conditioning for the natatorium and incorporates heat recovery to pool water and energy recovery for pre-conditioning of outside air. Condensate from the PDU is returned to the pool water treatment system to minimize the need for make-up water. Fabric air dispersion ducts are used for air supply within the natatorium as a cost-effective and colorful alternative to metal ducts. Energy recovery also is incorporated for non-natatorium air systems.

Results

An effective HVAC system for the natatorium was provided at the lowest possible cost. To help achieve this goal, the PDU was a packaged unit that allowed placement on a single roof curb with exposed exterior ducts that tuck beneath the natatorium roof to enter the space.
