Scope of Services
Investment Grade Energy Audit

2RW engineers conducted an energy survey of NASA Goddard/Greenbelt facilities in support of an Energy Savings Performance Contract (ESPC). The 2RW team was responsible for the mechanical systems including air handlers and air distribution systems, controls, utility metering, ground source heat pumps, and energy innovation.

2RW Project Case Study Main Image

2RW engineers conducted site surveys at twelve buildings including the facility that houses the Hubbell Space telescope service bay. The scope of work also included re-commissioning (Re-Cx) of three facilities. 2RW conducted annual hour-by-hour energy simulations of the following four buildings using the TRACE™ 700 Version 6.2 Building Energy and Economic Analysis simulation software, local weather data, and utility data trended at the NASA GSFC Energy Management Control System (EMCS).

  • The Space Sciences Lab (Building 6)
  • The Space and Terrestrial Applications Facility (Building 22)
  • The Network Training and Testing Facility (Building 25)
  • The Earth System Science Building (Building 33)

The purpose of this effort was to compare design simulations with operational energy use and predict how much energy could be saved from additional energy conservation measures (ECMs). 2RW developed and evaluated:

  • Design simulations (reflecting current operation and use)
  • Baseline simulations (reflecting current operational use)
  • Proposed alternatives (reflecting proposed ECMs)
  • The building’s system-level ECMs evaluated in these analyses included:
  • Central Plant supplied steam and chilled water (CHW) efficiency improvements.
  • Re-Cx of heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems and controls (Buildings 6, 22, and 33) which included space temperature set point adjustment, system start/stop, economizer operation, and hot water temperature reset.
  • Geothermal or ground source heat pump (GSHP) system retrofits with controls (Building 25).
