Energy Efficiency Technician

Summary:

2rw is seeking to hire a qualified energy efficiency technician in its Charlottesville office. Under the direction and supervision of an energy engineer, the energy efficiency technician will support the execution of projects in the Energy and Resources Department. This generally entails performing sufficient calculations, preparing supporting documentation, and generating completed work products such as but not limited to:

  • drawing take-offs
  • preliminary energy simulations in Trane TRACE 700
  • residential utility allowance models in EnergyPro or other prescribed software
  • commissioning system verification checklists

The position will include a variety of activities as individual projects require. A sample of the tasks the successful candidate will be expected to perform at the direction of an Energy Engineer include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Support Utility Allowance Activities
    • Perform building take-offs of architectural and mechanical components of residential building from drawings and specifications
    • Perform site inspections to acquire architectural dimensions and other pertinent data concerning utility allowances (travel required)
    • Maintain clear, well organized documentation of basis of analysis
    • Build residential energy models from acquired data using EnergyPro 5 software
    • Submit model and supporting basis-of-analysis documentation to energy engineer for review
  • Support Energy Modeling Activities
    • Perform building take-offs of architectural and mechanical components of commercial building from drawings and specifications
    • Develop architectural models in Trane Trace 700 based on take-offs
    • Maintain clear, well organized documentation of basis of analysis
    • Submit model and supporting basis-of-analysis documentation to energy engineer for review
  • Support Energy Audit Activities
    • Organize and analyze building and utility data
    • Travel to client sites to collect data about existing buildings
    • Use AutoCAD to draft engineering designs
  • Support Commissioning Activities
    • Review construction documents, prepare system verification checklists
    • Perform data entry and trend analysis of building automation system/data logger information
  • Aid in the analysis of quarterly and annual measurement and verification (M&V) reports
    • Perform data entry and spreadsheet analysis of supplied utility data as directed by an energy engineer
Desired Skills and Abilities
  • Must hold an Associate Degree in drafting or engineering or a high school diploma and have 3-5 years of experience as a draftsman, designer, or HVAC technician.
  • Preferred to have 0-2 years of energy auditing, drafting, or commissioning experience
  • Must have a basic understanding of energy units (kWh, Btu, Therm, etc.), utility rates, and building systems (envelope, HVAC, lighting).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word is required.
  • Proficiency with BIM and AutoCAD highly preferred.
  • Knowledge of EnergyPro or Trane Trace is preferred.
  • Able to work full time and maintain a consistent work schedule.
  • Conscientious and committed to accuracy with excellent organizational skills and an attention to details.
  • Willingness to travel approximately 15-20% with durations ranging from 1 day to 1 week.
